Types of Birth Injury
There are many potential types of birth injury, and the various types of injury fall into two main categories. These two categories are injuries to the mother and injuries to the baby. Whichever of these categories a birth injury falls into, if it can be shown that the injury occurred as a result of medical negligence, one of our expert birth injury lawyers may be able to help with claiming compensation.
Injuries to the mother
While giving birth, there are many injury risks to mothers which constitute the first type of birth injury. Some examples of types of birth injury to the mother can include nerve damage, sepsis and perineal tears.
Injuries to the child
Just like their mothers, new babies will often sustain more minor types of birth injuries during the birthing process, and these can heal without any real trouble. But more serious types of birth injury to the baby can include wrongful birth, cerebral palsy and Erb’s palsy.
Causes of birth injuries
There are many cases in which the causes of birth injuries are not anyone’s fault. When a baby is very large, or if it is born prematurely, the causes of birth injury may be beyond anyone’s control. In other cases, there is an unusual birthing presentation such as is the case with breech delivery births, and in these cases as well a birth injury may be unpreventable.
There are also smaller birth injuries which would not usually lead to claims because they will heal easily, such as certain amounts of bruising or swelling.
