Head Injuries
A head injury is usually considered to be a very serious injury, since any injury which can affect the brain could lead to long-term damage and a range of future complications for the victim. If you have sustained a head injury, read our head injury section for advice and information on the types of head injuries, how to claim head injury compensation and how to prevent head injuries from happening in the future.
Types of head injuries
Head injuries can vary in severity from slight concussion to severe brain damage or death. A head injury can occur for a variety of reasons, but the majority of head injury compensation claims happen following a road accident, where the head and skull move suddenly or are struck during impact.
Road traffic accidents are particularly dangerous for brain and head injuries because the force of the impact can cause the head to move dangerously in unexpected ways, and whether the head hits the airbag or another part of the car, the trauma can be devastating.
Sometimes it is not obvious that an injury has occurred, because brain injuries may not be apparent at first, but can lead to extreme damage to the individual over time. This makes head injuries particularly problematic for sufferers.
What types of head injury are there?
Along with road accidents, head injuries can occur because of slips and trips, through medical negligence or during a physical assault. Broken pavements often lead to falls which can cause head injuries, and these falling accidents may lead to head injury compensation claims.
Head injuries can include injuries to the brain and injuries to the skull, including conditions such as concussion, fractures to the skull, haemorrhaging and hematomas. Boxer’s syndrome and shaken baby syndrome are also types of head injury.
Symptoms of head injuries can range from life-changing conditions like brain damage which leads to mental or physical disability, to other symptoms varying in severity such as memory loss, fatigue or lack of concentration.
Could head injury compensation help?
Claiming compensation for a head injury can't cure the injury. However, it may help relieve some of the financial pressure by covering medical costs, or lost wages resulting from being forced to take time off work to recover.
