Teacher wins compensation after crash
18/10/2010
A teacher who sustained serious injuries during a coach crash has received £1.9 million in head injury compensation.
Gary Bishop, 55, could no longer teach after the incident in June 2007, in which a coach crash on a school trip in the French Alps left him with severe head wounds.
Mr Bishop, a father of two from Telford, Shropshire, had been head of IT at Shrewsbury’s Kingsland Grange School, but the injuries were said to have led to a change in his personality.
His solicitor said that although the accident happened four years ago, Mr Bishop’s injuries were still having a significant impact on his life.

Coach crash boy wins 3m compensation
25/7/2010
A 12-year-old boy has won at least £3.25 million in compensation for injuries he sustained during a coach crash in 1998.
Ben Eeles, from Brightlingsea in Colchester, suffered severe head injuries when a coach crashed into the car he was travelling in. The crash also caused several fatalities.
Although Ben is healthy, able to ride a bike and play with friends, he suffers from language, concentration and motor skills problems and will therefore require care and supervision for the rest of his life.
Barrister Bill Braithwaite QC told the High Court: “One of the features of this young man is that, not only does he have a charming and loving family around him, he is a delightful young chap.”
Ben’s mother Julie Eeles gave up a £100,000-a-year job following the accident to care for her son, and the family is now supported by Ben’s father Graham’s work as a self-employed boat builder.
Medical negligence claim for disabled boy
24/6/2010
A boy from Wearside has won compensation after mistakes at his birth led to him being severely disabled.
Jensen Carter, 6, was awarded a multimillion-pound settlement from the County Durham and Darlington Foundation Trust, who admitted liability for his birth injuries.
Jensen suffers from cerebral palsy as a result of being starved of oxygen at birth at the University Hospital of North Durham. His condition affects his mobility and causes feeding and communication problems.
His mother Gina said: "This settlement will be essential to give Jensen the care, therapy and equipment he needs to make the best of his life.
"My 10-year-old daughter Sasha has been a rock and is fantastic with Jensen, but families should not have to go through what we have been through."
Gina has set up a fund to enable Jensen’s specialist school, the Percy Hedley School, to build a new hydrotherapy pool. The fund, called the Tim Carter Appeal, has raised £500,000 towards its target of £1.2 million.
Compensation for spinal cord injury
28/3/2010
A sixteen-year-old has won compensation after being paralysed from the chest down due to a spinal cord injury at the age of 11.
Laura May, from Chorley, Lancashire, was having an operation to correct the curvature of her spine when the spinal injury occurred.
London’s High Court ruled that Laura’s surgeon, Roger Smith, had been negligent in not using a particular imaging technique during the surgery on her spine. He had also 'misplaced' a screw during her operation.
The Royal Preston Hospital is now expected to be ordered to pay millions in compensation to cover the cost of lifelong help and equipment needed to care for Laura for the rest of her life.
Laura’s mother, Christine, said the compensation would not make up for what had happened to her daughter.
"We did not launch this action for the money - we did it because the surgeon did not use the right equipment which led to Laura being paralysed,” she said.
"My daughter should be walking, but instead she is in a wheelchair. No amount of money can ever make up for this. Laura wants to get on with her life and has shown great resilience, but she has no other choice."

Family wins £350,000 in medical negligence claim
26/3/2010
The family of a cancer patient who died after being turned away from hospital has been awarded £350,000 in compensation.
Mother of two Lavinia Bletchly, 23, died in March 2005 from malignant non-Hodgkin lymphoma and peritonitis.
Lavinia, from Bridgend, had previously been turned away from hospital three times from the Princess of Wales Hospital in Bridgend.
On one occasion, a senior consultant is reported to have said there was no medical reason for the pain she claimed to be in and that she should instead seek psychiatric attention.
In reality, Lavinia, who was a full time university student, was suffering from a malignant tumour, which had encased her bowel and spread up to her stomach.
Most of the compensation will go to her two daughters, now aged six and nine. Lavinia's father Arthur, 57, said: "They are lovely little girls and have kept us going. Lavinia just wanted to see her children grow up and get married. She loved them so much.
