Causes of Spinal Injuries
Spinal injuries are normally the result of a very sudden and serious trauma to the spine and therefore the causes of spinal injuries tend to involve the victim being subject to sudden or violent accidents or events. These are called ‘traumatic’ causes.
There are also ‘non-traumatic’ causes of spinal cord injury, for example where a congenital condition, or a related illness, leads to the spine being affected.
‘Traumatic’ causes of spinal injuries
The causes of spinal injuries can range from road traffic accidents to sporting injuries and assault. A very serious work-related accident can also sometimes cause a spinal injury.
Complications during certain types of surgery, such as surgery to correct the spinal condition scoliosis, can also be the cause of spinal injuries.
Non-traumatic causes of spinal cord injury
Among the non-traumatic causes of spinal injury is the congenital medical condition spina bifida. Tumours pressing on the spinal column can also cause spinal injuries, as can infection of the spinal cord nerve cells.
What is the prognosis following a spinal cord injury?
Mostly, the cause of spinal injury won’t entirely sever the spinal cord, and a certain level of movement is retained below the location of the injury and, in some cases, a full recovery is possible. However, where the cause of spinal injury has completely severed the spinal cord tissue, there may be complete paralysis below the point of the injury.
